Baftas 2021: All The Major Winners & Losers

6. Best Adapted Screenplay - The Father

The Father Anthony Hopkins
Sony Pictures Classics

After receiving nominations in every major ceremony - from the Golden Globes to the Critics' Choice Movie Awards - it was a surprise to see The Father finally win an award for its screenplay.

While Nomadland looked like the favourite, with its writer/editor/director Chloé Zhao picking up every other award, this adapted French play managed to triumph. Whether it was the strong British cast that won over the Bafta voters or the fairly forgettable nominees it was pitted against (sorry The Dig and The White Tiger), it was ultimately a well deserved win for the heart-breaking indie film.

Whether this will help it win the Best Adapted Screenplay honour at the Oscars, battling against Nomadland and The White Tiger again, remains to be seen but this will certainly help give it the push it needs to do so.
