Barbie Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

7. Ryan Gosling's Ken Steals The Show

Barbie's name may be on the film's title, but it's Ryan Gosling's Ken who steals the whole show.

Even though Gosling is better-known for drama, the double Oscar-nominee has proven in The Nice Guys, Crazy Stupid Love, and other features to have a knack for comedy.

But in Barbie, Gosling took his talents to a whole new level. Barbie has a plethora of comedic actors, but Gosling is sure to bring about the most laughs. His comic delivery and timing is on point in every scene. Even when he's invested in a deeply dramatic confrontation Gosling still finds a way to pepper each line and movement with his signature Kenergy. (Also, the musical numbers prove he's a surprisingly amazing singer.)

However, Ken isn't just funny, but surprisingly complex. Gosling effortlessly portrays Barbie's wannabe boyfriend as a tragic figure, a joke, a bitter rival, an upstanding guy, and a toxic man-baby. On top of that, he's able to flip from one persona to another on a dime.

In a nutshell, Ken isn't just the most entertaining element of Barbie - this performance is among Gosling's best work.
