Jack Palance has a special place in DC history, because in addition to playing Gotham mob boss Carl Grissom in this movie, he was reportedly Jack Kirby's physical inspiration while creating Darkseid back in 1971.

Palance, a veteran actor who received his first Oscar nomination in 1953, enjoyed a career resurgence during the late '80s and early '90s, leading to him winning a long overdue Best Supporting Actor Oscar for 1992's City Slickers, some 38 years after his last nomination.

Palance's acceptance speech remains the stuff of Academy Awards legend, whereby he mercilessly mocked his co-star (and Oscar host) Billy Crystal and performed one-armed push-ups on stage.

Palance took a role or two per year for the rest of his life, appearing in the likes of Cyborg 2: Glass Shadow, Cops and Robbersons, City Slickers II, and providing a voice role for The Swan Princess.

In later years he also sold paintings he created and published a book of poetry, before passing away from natural causes in 2006 at age 87.
