For decades, Alfred has been depicted as an old, feeble man. But any comic fan knows he was a force to be reckoned with in his youth thanks to his time as an SAS officer and MI5 agent. He was such a skilled soldier and marksman, his superiors created a clone of him to serve as their super-assassin. (Yes, really.)

Sadly, we never saw Batman's prized butler in his physical prime in live-action until recently. The 2019 series, Pennyworth, follows Alfred as a young soldier who's targeted by a nefarious society after he encounters an American agent called Thomas Wayne.

The posh, stoic butler we are all familiar with is nowhere to be seen here. This version of Alfred is cheeky, smooth, and a charmer with the ladies.

To some, it can be alienating if the character bares no resemblance to his traditional persona. Thankfully, the actor portraying him, Jack Bannon, is excellent at conveying the importance of loyalty and family, so you can picture this man becoming the Alfred we all know and love. Bannon may not have the same gravitas as other actors, but he still does a cracking job in the role.
