Batman: Every Live-Action Catwoman Ranked Worst To Best

2. Eartha Kitt - Batman

Batman Returns Catwoman
WB TV

Eartha Kitt was the second actress to portray Selina in the Batman TV series and created history as the first black woman to don the skin-tight suit after replacing Julie Newmar in the Batman TV series’ third and final season. Although Kitt was only in five episodes of the show, Kitt proved that she was not only a worthy successor but also a great actress with talent who was able to take on this role as her own.

Kitt’s version of Selina delves even deeper into her darker side, creating a more villainous and wilder take on the character. Her Catwoman seems to act more like a catlike figure, purring almost every line she delivered and even adding some hisses here and there - all while simultaneously keeping the campiness of Newmar’s portrayal but adding her own sexuality and humour on top of that.

Julie Newmar herself even admitted Kitt was born to play this role. It is no doubt she was purrrrrrrfect for the gig, as Eartha was able to breathe new life into the character, making fans quickly forget about the portrayals that came before her.
