Batman Future Films: 8 Big Questions That Demand Answers
4. What Role Is Robin/Nightwing Going To Play In The Films?
The character of Robin/Nightwing has had a rocky history on film. He didn't make it into Tim Burton's films, was present in the Schumacher disasters, and was resigned to a fan Easter Egg in the Nolan trilogy. Girls actor Adam Driver is rumored to be playing Dick Grayson/Nightwing in Batman Vs. Superman. The fact that it is Nightwing and not Robin (i.e. Dick Grayson's former superhero identity) appearing means that we will be seeing an older version of Dick who is no longer Batman's sidekick, but is instead out fighting crime on his own. Because of this, one has to question whether or not Dick Grayson would appear in a Batman standalone film. Sure, Nightwing may still exist in the same universe as Batman and team up with him occasionally, but he certainly isn't as tied to him as the younger, less experienced Robin is. This means that a number of scenarios are possible. We may get a Batman film after Batman vs Superman were neither Nightwing or Robin make an appearance, or we could see a situation where they do in fact decide to team up with Batman. Another possibility is that Nightwing goes it alone and Batman drafts in someone else to take over the role of Robin from Dick Grayson (eg: Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown, Damian Wayne), which comic readers will know opens up a huge range of new story options. If Nightwing proves popular enough in Batman vs Superman there is also a possibility that we might get to see him spin-off into his own film; something that wouldn't be impossible when you consider all the solo features that he has had in the comics.
