Batman Future Films: 8 Big Questions That Demand Answers
3. Could We Possibly See Spin-offs?
As previously mentioned, the character of Nightwing has had spin-off series' of his own, as has his earlier incarnation Robin. With comic book movies so popular at the moment it doesn't seem impossible that these characters could get films of their own. Nightwing/Robin is more well known than Thor - a character who has now appeared in two successful stand-alone films, and he has the added advantage of being able to be introduced in a Batman movie which would likely draw in a big crowd (as Batman movies have been shown to consistently do). There are also plenty of villains in the Gotham City rogue's gallery, meaning that you could have Nightwing/Robin fighting a big-name villain in his film without stepping on Batman's toes. There is a rather dirty fly in the ointment, though. In 2004, Warner Bros. attempted to give a Batman character their own spin-off film, and the result was Halle Berry's Catwoman; a movie so bad that it won four Golden Raspberry awards, nearly destroyed the career of its Oscar-winning lead actress, and set the women's liberation movement back approximately seven and a half decades. Whilst it is unlikely that any future Batman character spin-off film could suck on the level of the same level as Catwoman, the mere memory of that movie is enough for most comic book fans to take a flamethrower to their DVD player and swear never to even look at a pair of leather pants ever again. To get fans onside for any spin-off film - be it focusing on Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman, or someone else entirely - Warner Bros. has to build up trust again in its audience, and prove to them that the movies they plan on producing are going to be of a quality more in line with the Nolan trilogy, rather than something that they are going to find steaming in their cat's litter-tray.
