Batman: Gotham By Gaslight Review - 5 Ups & 5 Downs
1. It Fails To Make The Most Of Its R Rating
The fact that Gotham by Gaslight is R-rated might go a way to explain why the movie looks so cheap, and perhaps if it served up adult thrills to make the most of its mature tone, then the hit the visuals take might've been worth it.
As it stands, though, the film is weirdly tame, save for a few brief flashes of Jack the Ripper stabbing women with squibs of blood squiring out. Most of the corpses are tastefully obscured, and even when a certain character appears to get ripped in half, it's disguised in the most irritatingly PG-13 way possible.
What's the point of the R rating if it's not going to be used to make the brutal most of a showdown between the Dark Knight and Jack the freaking Ripper? All things considered, this probably should've been rated PG-13, because at least then the film would look a little better.
A mixed bag as it is, though, here's everything Warner Bros. actually got right...
