Batman Movie Villains: 7 Perfect Performances & 7 That Sucked
5. Poison Ivy - Uma Thurman (Batman & Robin)
Joel Schumacher has a lot to answer for. Though his hands were tied thanks to Warner Bros' need to rebrand Batman as a family friendly franchise after Tim Burton's carnival of grotesques frightened the delicates, his interpretation still left a lot to be desired.
That's particularly obvious in Batman & Robin - the film Schumacher maintains he made while wanting to make a far grittier, grown-up one - which is a ballet of technicolour nonsense with characters who wouldn't be out of place in the 1960s Batman show.
Uma Thurman's Poison Ivy is not the worst of the bunch, but there are serious problems - like her choice to team up with a man intent on freezing all life while she wants to allow plant life to take over the Earth. The performance is too over-the-top, she's both hammy and camp and she's as alien to restraint as she is to depth of characterisation.
