Thanks to an apparent leak from Empire cinemas in the UK, we now know how Luthor will fit into the Batman/Superman dynamic. The cinema chain posted an official sounding synopsis to their website, suggesting that Luthor is the grand manipulator behind the scenes, turning Batman and Superman against each other:

So basically he's Iago (the Shakespearean villain, not the parrot). Rating: 10/10 Yeah, it's not exactly rocket science, is it? For the film to work as a versus movie (at least for the first two thirds), Batman and Superman need to be under the impression that they are enemies, and that's going to require an evil intelligence superior to both of them to pull of (because they'd presumably be able to work their problems out if they managed to sit down and chat). To have Luthor in that role makes perfect sense.
