One shot from the Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice trailers that lacks much context is that brief glimpse of Henry Cavills Supes kneeling before Lex Luthor. The reasons for this defeatist gesture are currently entirely unclear. That hasnt stopped the fans from speculating, though. One online fan theory suggests that Jesse Eisenbergs Lex Luthor could kidnap Martha Kent, Clarks sole remaining adoptive parent portrayed (by Diane Lane in the DC Extended Universe). By snatching and threatening Clarks only parental figure left alive, Lex could perhaps blackmail Superman into obeying his orders. This theory seems plausible, but there isnt much to back it up just yet. At this stage, Diane Lane has only appeared in the trailers to impart advice to Clark. So, if she has a larger role to play, Zack Snyder and co. have it firmly under wraps. There are also other reasons that Superman could begrudging bow down to Lex, of course. Weve already glimpsed both Kryptonite and that Doomsday-esque creature in the trailer. It seems pretty clear that Lex is looking for ways to defeat Superman. Perhaps, rather than kill him, Lex is actually looking to control him using the threat of death as Supes motivation. Only time will tell exactly why Superman kneels before Lex.
