Batman V Superman: 12 Early Reactions You Need To Know

9. The Script & Execution Are Messy

A consensus among even the positive reviews is that Batman v Superman is a huge mess. The screenplay has been especially taken to task for its "little thought for niceties such as plot, character or wit" (The Times), "dialogue sounds like something written by a teenager who just discovered philosophy" (Digital Spy), and "character development is not a priority" (Heyuguys). The length and general bloat of the film has also been slammed, the outing labeled as "overstuffed and abnormally extended" (The Guardian), "confusing" (Entertainment Weekly), "a burdensome 150-minute slog" (Screen Crush) and "cluttered and narratively wonky" (Empire). Most brutal of all in this regard was The Telegraph's savage takedown: "No major blockbuster in years has been this incoherently structured, this seemingly uninterested in telling a story with clarity and purpose...the film regularly defies common sense and logic." Ouch. Meanwhile, the inevitable Batman-Superman brawl has received mixed notices: "Snyder makes you wait, and wait, and wait for the championship bout" (Empire), and "the title clash ultimately disappoints" (Gamesradar). Finally we come to the third act, described as "generic and exhausting" (Empire), "chaotic, noisy and wholly unnecessary" (Cinema Blend), and a "numbing smash-and-bash orgy of CGI mayhem" (Entertainment Weekly) that "melts into an electric soup of CGI" (The Times).
