Batman V Superman: 12 Early Reactions You Need To Know

10. It's Not "Fun" Enough

Critics lambasted Man of Steel for being overly somber and self-serious while failing to pack the fun of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and whether you consider this an unfair complaint or not, it's being echoed here once again. Digital Spy arguably put it best by contrasting, "It's silly, yet it takes itself so seriously", while some reviews weren't quite so kind: "so topheavy with false portent that it buckles under its own weight" (Time), "this movie is almost a self-parody on 'grimdark'" (Forbes), and "this is the superficial darkness of the Goth pop that sounds behind slammed teenage doors" (Irish Times). Several critics also compared it unfavourably to Marvel's The Avengers, with The Guardian proclaiming that the movie's tone is "enough to make you yearn for the lighter touch of the Marvel films". IGN instead compared the film to another of Snyder's controversial adaptations, noting, "Those expecting BvS to be DC's answer to Marvel's Avengers will find it more akin to Snyder's Watchmen instead...Kids going for a superhero slugfest may be disappointed they have to sit through so much soul-searching and politics to get to the cape-and-cowl action sold in the trailers." And simply, Empire concisely added, "A few jokes wouldn€™t have gone amiss."
