Though there have been some notorious cases of sequels killing franchises (particularly in the comic book genre), none have been as bad as Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer.

Starting with a poor original (like Man Of Steel, Fantastic Four wasn't exactly universally loved), the sequel went too big and too silly and apparently handed over scripting duties to a child. The parallels are shudder-inducing.

Why It Did Better

Possibly because it heeded some of the complaints levelled at its predecessor, while Batman v Superman basically doomed itself to relive the crimes of Man Of Steel. Just adding more without addressing the cracks is just a good way of ensuring collapse.

The Lesson For Warner Bros

Unfortunately, sometimes there's no way back from jumping the shark and using your universe's biggest villain too early.
