Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - 8 Reasons Why The New Trailer Kills All Hope For The Film

6. Jokes On You - There's Humour

Over a year ago the ironically laughable story broke that forging forward DC's movie universe was going to be ruled over by one ironclad commandment: "no jokes". The logic behind it made some sense - the report came less than a month after Marvel had cleared up with the incredibly jokey Guardians Of The Galaxy, a film only made possible thanks to the quipping of The Avengers, which in turn owed a lot to the wit of Robert Downey, Jr.'s Tony Stark. It's a total overreaction of course, treating cinema as a two-tracked form, but you can see why Warners would try to resolutely differentiate themselves from their rival by going for an unmistakably different tone. But it turns out the joke was on us; there is going to be humour in this. And not just a bit of levity to break up the self-sincerity; we're talking Marvel-style barbs. "Is she with you?" Supes asks Batman, to which the Caped Crusader responds, "I thought she was with you." Urgh. That could, quite literally, be Iron Man and Star-Lord discussing the arrival of Captain Marvel in Avengers: Infinity War and it wouldn't feel out of place. But here? Given how this world has been set up it feels odd, and only furthers the thinking that, while Dawn Of Justice wants to resoundingly set up the DCEU, Warner Bros. still haven't quite decided on what tone they're going with.
