Batman V Superman: 5 Major Revelations From The Costume Designer

4. Wilkinson Poured Over 75 Years Of History To Get The Designs Just Right

No matter how Batman V Superman turns out, you can't say Wilkinson wasn't taking his part seriously. The costume designer reportedly poured over 75 years of combined pop cultural history to ensure that the new iterations both stood on their own two feet, whilst simultaneously honouring the legacy these celebrated character's harbour.
"I studied how they have been portrayed over the last 75 years on film, on TV, in comic books, graphic novels and video games. I studied what they mean to people, what they stand for, why they are important. I started an exhaustive search for new materials and technologies €” original ways of portraying these characters that would be unlike anything audiences have seen before."
Everything about this statement fills me with glee, Obviously on a big budget project you're expected to do your homework, but to see Wilkinson situate the characters in a variety of contexts and mediums, suggests he's innately aware these are more than just superheroes. These are icons, sculpted through multiple versions and interpretations, by some of the twentieth century's most revered artists and storytellers. That Wilkinson has considered everything from the original Bob Kane works, to his own contribution on Man of Steel, lends Batman V Superman the unique opportunity to present the most historically considered and complete set of heroes yet.
