Batman V Superman: 5 Moments From The Comic-Con Trailer (That Will Suck In The Film)

3. The Death Of The Waynes: Once More With Feeling

Batman grappling his way out of Superman's laser blast! A Joker-graffitied Robin suit! The Dark Knight overpowered by Superman's army (the one unanimously good part of the trailer)! Wow - this Batman is like nothing we've seen before. Well, almost. As the trailer's mid-point inexplicably relished in, for the fourth time since Tim Burton's 1989 Batman we're going to be seeing the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne in Batman V Superman. Why? In this film Bruce has been spelunking and taking freight planes away from ballet dancers for two decades now, but Dawn Of Justice still thinks it's worth showing. You don't want a Batman who's over his parents like Val Kilmer in Batman Forver, but, conversely, not every story needs to hinge on it. Audiences know Batman's origin by heart. We don't need to see it again, even in flashback, especially when we've already got at least one other key motivation scene to slumber through (see point five). Marvel appear to be smartly side-stpeping the radioactive-bite sequence for this latest edition of Spider-Man, so why can't DC do the same? This could be used to contrast with the previous Man Of Steel retcon or the loss he suffers staring at the overt Joker tease, which would give some vague justification within the narrative, but by now can't it go unsaid? Oddly enough, from what's seen here, the film doesn't quite embrace its The Dark Knight Returns-era Bruce Wayne; on top of the flashbacks, Perry White talks about Batman as if he's a newly emerged phenomenon.
