Batman V Superman: 5 Moments From The Comic-Con Trailer (That Will Suck In The Film)

2. Alfred Undermines The Whole Film

Jeremy Irons as Alfred looks about as off in basic conception as Marisa Tomei as Aunt May; quite simply, too young, especially given how we're dealing with an older Bruce. While that's working against Irons, from the few clips seen here he looks to be making up for it with a strong, partner-ish butler. It's just a shame he's lumbered with one of the trailer's worst lines; "He is not our enemy." It's a prophetic piece of dialogue, sure, but is little more than a "trailer quote" - it's hard to imagine it not feeling a bit off in the movie itself - and manages to undermine the whole idea of the two heroes going mano a mano (and paints Bruce as the villain, a cool idea but again not a total fit for the film). Of course Batman and Superman are going to wind up the best of friends come the film's end (and, given the plot synopsis, likely quite a bit earlier than that), but does everyone in the movie beside the titular two need to be aware of that ahead of time? OK, a caveat to this one - we all know (particularly thanks to DC's big rival, Marvel) that trailers can be incredibly misleading, presenting unrelated events as concurrent, so it's entirely possible Alfred's talking about someone else - Lex perhaps. Although that means he's giving incredibly bad advice and thus undermines the character somewhat.
