Batman V Superman: Ranking The Characters By Anticipation

7. Alfred Pennyworth

Since 1989, audiences have been given seven live-action Batman films, across all of which there have been two different interpretations of Bruce Wayne's loyal butler Alfred. With Michael Gough, the character was given a light-hearted, amiable touch, one who actively supported his master from the Batcave. With Michael Caine, the character served more as Bruce Wayne's moral center, quite sensitive and far more outwardly concerned about the end of the path his master was headed down. With Jeremy Irons taking on the role for Batman v Superman, it's pretty clear we'll be getting a far different take on the character, one which the actor himself has described as "hands-on." Irons can be a dominating presence, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him bring that to the table in making his Alfred a man willing to smack sense into Bruce once in awhile and who refuses to let Bruce ignore his advice time and again. However it plays out, the pairing of actor and character is brilliant and exciting, and one that could make watching the Bruce/Alfred dynamic at play a pleasure to watch.
