We know, right? Had this been a suggestion a couple of years ago, people would have presumably rallied in the streets setting fire to copies of Sahara and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, and now... well, now this seems like something that could be genuinely exciting. So, no, we never imagined that it might be possible to say the words "Matthew McConaughey as the next Joker" with a straight face, but looking back at the fine body of work he's assembled recently, it's legit. Okay, so he'd probably need to do something with that Southern accent, but look at the depth, mania and fearlessness that he's brought to pretty much every role since The Lincoln Lawyer. Can you picture his Joker as a kind of madman crossover between his characters in Dallas Buyers Club and HBO's True Detective? In Buyers Club, he pulls off a sense of the deranged, and True Detective shows that he can successfully play "weirded out" with the best of 'em. There's still a chance that this could be a disaster waiting to happen, of course, but of the picks assembled on this list, Matthew McConaughey still feels like the freshest choice of all. With his recent track record, it'd be real interesting to see what he'd do with the keys to this character at his fingertips. And let's face it: if McConaughey nabbed the role, you know that - at the very least - he would downright refuse to put in a half-assed performance. Those days are officially over. Like this article?
