Baywatch Review: 2 Ups & 8 Downs

7. The Awful Visual Effects

Baywatch Dwayne Johnson

This is what you get when you make a two-hour action movie starring The Rock and Zac Efron and budget it at around $40 million.

Something's gotta give somewhere, and it ends up being the visual effects, resulting in the film's numerous aquatic action sequences looking like hot garbage.

The most egregious sequence occurs early on, when the Baywatch team are saving several women from a burning boat. It's clear that the heroes have simply been composited in via green screen, and the CGI fire in particular looks like something that wouldn't pass muster in a PS2 game.

To make matters worse, the film's gag reel shows numerous dialogue-driven scenes filmed entirely against a green screen, which is just embarrassing.

Stay at home dad who spends as much time teaching his kids the merits of Martin Scorsese as possible (against the missus' wishes). General video game, TV and film nut. Occasional sports fan. Full time loon.
