Beauty And The Beast Remake: 18 Major Changes Disney Made

5. Beast’s Backstory

In The Original

All we get of Beast's backstory is that he was a self-involved douchebag who made the mistake of looking down on an ugly hag who came to his castle door. There's no hint of his parents or why he was such an awful cretin.

In The Remake

Mercifully, the live action remake restores Beast's backstory, in an attempt to explain his behaviour and temperament. He is the product of abuse, effectively, as he loved his mother dearly, but his over-bearing father kept them apart as she lay on her deathbed. He suffered a terrible childhood, basically, and is not just a bad kid.

His transformation is revealed also to not just be because he was judgemental of the ugly witch, but instead was thanks to his hedonistic and selfish lifestyle and his disdain for others.

As another strong addition to the movie, it's revealed that the enchanted servants feel partly responsible for his treatment and for not intervening, which is why they remain at the castle, and probably also why they were cursed along with him (which always seemed particularly cruel in the cartoon).
