Beauty And The Beast Remake: 18 Major Changes Disney Made
1. LeFou's Gay Moment
In The Original
LeFou's relationship with Gaston is mostly defined by idiotic sycophancy. He is besotted with the idea of Gaston's masculinity and intoxicated by his alpha maleness.
In The Remake
There's more romance to LeFou's infatuation with Gaston: his is an unrequited love as opposed to simple, aggressive fandom - which explains why a charming character who definitely isn't a villain himself would align himself with such a monster.
But nothing happens between the two. Instead, the "exclusively gay moment" that was talked up by Disney - and which was included as a tribute to the dearly departed Howard Ashman, who wrote the theme as an allegory for his homosexuality died of AIDs before the 1991 version's release - is completely, refreshingly normalised.
The moment boils down to LeFou and a fellow mob henchman dancing at the ball thrown by Belle and the Prince, giving him the hint of a happy ending.
