Beauty And The Beast: 20 Fiendishly Clever Easter Eggs You Probably Missed
2. Gaston's Killer Look
This one is now purely for the DVD owners, since alterations wiped this Egg off the VHS, laderdisc and blu-ray releases.
When Gaston has stabbed Beast after the climactic battle at the castle, he falls from the building and a close-up of his face reveals the presence of two skulls emblazoned creepily on his pupils. Disney have apparently responded to their presence, saying they confirmed his grim fate, so quite why they were edited out (aside from the morbid connotations in a kid's film) remains something of a mystery.
Incidentally, in the earliest drafts of the script, Gaston was supposed to only be injured by the fall, and would be rather symbolically killed by the wolves waiting below. That particular story element ended up being reused elsewhere: for The Lion King three years later in 1994.
