9. Andy - Bring Her Back
The Philippou Brothers sure as heck pulled no punches with their savage Talk to Me follow-up Bring Her Back, which commits to grim brutality all the way to the end.
Considering the film follows two stepsiblings, Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are orphaned and consequently placed with the foster mother from hell Laura (Sally Hawkins), you might conceivably assume that both would make it to the end of the movie in one piece.
But oh no, that's not what the Philippous had in store for us, sadly.
In the climax, Andy finally convinces social worker Wendy (Sally-Anne Upton) to visit the house where Laura is planning an occult ritual to resurrect her late daughter, but when the duo attempt to flee the scene, Laura runs them over with her car.
Wendy is killed instantly while Andy is gravely wounded, and while it seems like there's still hope for Andy to somehow survive, that's all snuffed out moments later when she shoves his face into a nearby rain puddle.
The Philippous linger on poor Andy as he's helpless to do anything but drown, leaving Piper to take on Laura by herself - which, thankfully, she does successfully.
