5. Count Orlok - Nosferatu
We all knew that Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) was going to perish at the end of Robert Eggers' Nosferatu - it was simply a matter of seeing how Eggers would execute it with cutting-edge effects work.
Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) ends up submitting herself to Orlok, allowing him to feast upon her until dawn, his appetite proving insatiable enough that he's unable to stop himself despite the emerging sunrise.
And so, Ellen holds Orlok close as the sun starts to burn him, but more than that, he starts bleeding from seemingly every single orifice while smoldering down to his skeletal form.
It all looks painful enough that you might almost feel a teensy bit sorry for the guy - almost - yet the final glimpse of a dead Ellen clutching Orlok's remains is also oddly beautiful.
Eggers did a fantastic job of making Ellen a more active participant in the story's finale, and giving fans a literally face-melting send-off for ol' Orlok.
