10 Best Horror Movies Of 2026 (So Far)
4. Backrooms
2026 has seen the rather unexpected trend of certain creators and properties making the jump from YouTube to full-length horror features. Markiplier's Iron Lung, as well as a certain smash hit to come later in the list, are joined in this category by Backrooms.
Initially starting as nothing more than an image, and then a series of videos on YouTube, the property has expanded to a larger platform and has been successfully adapted into a genuinely impressive feature film, far better than likely anybody could have predicted.
While it had a lot of star power behind it, the likes of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and James Wan to name a handful, this was still an incredibly impressive debut from director Kane Parsons. The Backrooms was expanded upon, of course, within the near two-hour runtime, but at its core remained a deeply unsettling realm of mystery.
You could argue after the twists and turns of such a story, an audience would be expecting answers, but in resisting such temptation, Backrooms doubled down on its weird world so much so that it worked. A movie like this doesn't need closure; people are supposed to leave the cinema with more questions than answers, something that Backrooms got very right.
