20 Greatest Horror Movie Endings of the 2020s (So Far)
8. Presence
Steven Soderbergh's Presence concludes with an ingenious snake-eating-its-own-tail ending, as we find out that Tyler's (Eddy Maday) friend Ryan (West Mulholland) is actually a serial killer who drugs and kills young girls, having previously killed Chloe's (Callina Liang) friend Nadia.
He then tries to kill Chloe, and as he begins to suffocate her, the spectral presence from whose perspective the film unfolds desperately tries to wake an incapacitated Tyler.
He's eventually roused awake, at which point he intervenes and tackles Ryan out of Chloe's bedroom window, causing them both to fall to their deaths outside.
In the movie's epilogue, Chloe and her family are preparing to move out of the house, just as her mother Rebekah (Lucy Lui) senses the presence and sees a reflection of Tyler in the living room, causing her to break down.
Basically, the presence was Tyler all along, and because the film established earlier that a presence experiences time in non-linear fashion, Tyler's spirit was trying to save Chloe the entire time, even before Tyler himself actually died.
There's a fascinating chicken-and-egg quality to this ending, which will surely make you want to immediately rewatch the film armed with this new knowledge.
