6. Bring Her Back
For as nasty as the Philippou Brothers' second feature Bring Her Back is, its ending is actually incredibly sad, no matter the many horrific things led up to it.
In the finale, an unhinged, grief-stricken Laura (Sally Hawkins) drags her foster daughter Piper (Sora Wong) to the family pool in an attempt to drown her and complete the ritual which will allow her to resurrect her late daughter Cathy.
However, when Piper cries out for her mother, Laura releases her, allowing Piper to escape, just as the police arrive to find Laura cradling her daughter's corpse in the pool.
There's nothing particularly flashy or extravagant about this ending, but it is completely heartbreaking.
For all of the terrible things Laura did throughout the film, the haunting final glimpse of her with her daughter's remains is a stinging reminder of how loss can completely hollow a person out, changing them entirely forever.
