20 Best Horror Movie Final Girls of the 2020s (So Far)

Maika Monroe has emerged as one of the greatest Scream Queens of the past decade-or-so, and in recent years her strongest Final Girl is surely Julia from Chloe Okuno's gut-wrenchingly suspenseful Watcher.

Julia is an American woman living in Bucharest who comes to believe that a man living in a building opposite hers (Burn Gorman) is in fact a serial killer known as The Spider.

Julia is instantly sympathetic as a fish out of water who is clearly struggling to adjust to life in Romania, unaided by her partner Francis' (Karl Glusman) refusal to take her suspicions particularly seriously.

Julia is effectively dealing with this problem alone, but of course, she's eventually proven to be right, and though the Spider makes a game effort to dispose of her, Julia uses her wiles to kill him despite sustaining some seriously grim injuries.

She's basically an emblem for the dangers of gaslighting, but thankfully Julia is smart enough to follow her gut instinct, while Monroe brings a brilliantly haunted quality to the character.
