10 PERFECT Monster Movies You MUST Watch
6. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark
Despite being tailored for children, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is anything but kid-friendly. Andre Ovredal's supernatural horror opens with a group of teenagers reading from a mystical book, which unleashes dark forces upon their town.
Though Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark takes its time setting up the ensemble, the payoff is worth it. We get to know each of these teens thoroughly, so we should be fully invested when they're finally confronted by the monsters.
These creepy entities look and move in a subtly uncanny manner, which is sure to trigger fight-or-flight responses in viewers. Rather than being jump-scare machines, each monster approaches its prey slowly but purposefully, embodying subtle dread and inevitable doom. The Pale Lady appears wherever her victim is looking, making it impossible to run away from her, despite how slowly she advances. The Jangly Man can contort his limbs to fit into any opening, so escape is out of the question.
Despite what the PG-13 rating suggests, viewers of any age will find their blood curdling while watching this underrated gem.
