20 Awesome Horror Movies NOBODY Talks About
19. The Wolf of Snow Hollow
The Wolf of Snow Hollow is the second feature from brilliant indie filmmaker Jim Cummings (Thunder Road), and though well-received by critics, this snow-topped horror flick had the misfortune of releasing at the height of the pandemic, where it got lost amid a pile-up of unreleased movies jockeying for the spotlight.
What at first appears to be a relatively familiar werewolf movie is ultimately far smarter and more inventive than that - though giving away any of its surprises would be absolutely criminal.
Like Cummings' debut, The Wolf of Snow Hollow mines a deep well of gallows humour while fleshing its characters out with unexpected nuance and even heart.
And then there's the performances, particularly those of Cummings as a troubled deputy sheriff whose sleepy Utah town is terrorised by a werewolf, and the late, great Robert Forster in his final role as the town's grizzled sheriff.
Cummings' film may not reinvent the wheel, but it is an assured, enticingly weird stab at a horror subgenre many consider thoroughly played out.
