20 Great Performances Wasted In Terrible Horror Movies

9. Sam Rockwell - Poltergeist (2015)

2015's Poltergeist joined the pantheon of generic, forgettable horror remakes few were asking for.

Though competently made at a baseline level, it simply brought nothing new or interesting to the original story, while lacking the pulse-quickening tension and distinct style of Tobe Hooper's iconic 1982 original.

But at least we've got another reliably great Sam Rockwell performance to savour here.

Even though the role of husband-father Eric Bowen isn't much of a stretch for Rockwell, he brings plenty of his usual offbeat charm to the table, in turn standing out in a sea of fair blandness.

Rockwell can class up even the worst film with his left-field line deliveries and generally amusing choices, and that's absolutely true here.

Eric's increasing annoyance with the paranormal phenomena enveloping his home is the prime entertainment value on offer here, because the spooky supernatural shenanigans never get out of first gear.

It's easy to see why Rockwell was cast in what was surely a mere paycheck role for him, but he tried his best to inject some life into it regardless.
