6. Ohm's Suicide Attempt - Hokum

The third film from Caveat and Oddity filmmaker Damian McCarthy follows Ohm Bauman (Adam Scott), an author who travels to a rural Irish hotel to scatter the ashes of his late parents.

It isn't long before things get strange and uncomfortable at the hotel, unaided by Ohm's thoroughly unpleasant attitude towards the hotel's staff.

And then comes the big surprise.

About 25 minutes into the movie's runtime, Ohm retires to his room, and when the hotel's bartender heads to his room to give him his tape recorder back, she finds that he's hanged himself.

Ohm survives his suicide attempt, though, which is later revealed to be out of lifelong guilt for a childhood accident in which he fatally shot his mother.

This is a classic "s**t just got real" movie moment - a totally unpredictable turn which expertly puts the audience on edge for the rest of the film's runtime.
