20 Totally INSANE Moments From Recent Horror Movies

5. Ida Gets Possessed By Mary Shelley - The Bride!

THE BRIDE JESSE BUCKLEY
Warner Bros.

With all the reports of Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Bride! suffering through disastrous test screenings, it's perhaps little surprise that Warner Bros. decided to entirely conceal the film's most polarising and downright insane creative choice in its marketing.

Right at the start of the movie, we're introduced to Frankenstein author Mary Shelley herself, also played by Jessie Buckley, who monologues to the audience from the afterlife, before suddenly possessing the film's actual protagonist, a woman living in 1930s Chicago called Ida (Buckley).

Because of this, Ida ends up having unhinged outbursts throughout the movie where her accent suddenly switches from American to English while spitting a bunch of stream-of-consciousness verbiage.

Despite Buckley's undeniably game performance in the role, it's a creative choice that ultimately proves more grating and irritating than entertaining, adding a layer of contrived strangeness to a film that many already felt was often too weird for its own sake.
