Best/Worst Case For 15 Summer Movies (With Predictions)

8. Child's Play

The Lion King Simba
MGM

Release Date: June 21st

Last year's Halloween was one of the most successful horror movies ever made, proving the slasher genre still has some legs. Child's Play will be the next long-standing horror franchise to put it to the test. After a couple of direct-to-video releases, the evil doll will finally return to the big screen as Mark Hamill will give voice to Buddi.

Best Case: More so than most films in the genre, Child's Play has the opportunity to be more creative and funny in its approach, similar to 2017's It. If it takes advantage of its inventive potential and the talents of Mark Hamill and Aubrey Plaza, this reinvention of Child's Play will breathe new life into a franchise we haven’t taken seriously in a decades.

Worst Case: There is a reason the previous two installments in this franchise were direct--to-dvd releases. In a world of Halloween and It reboots, there may just not be enough interest in Chucky. Child's Play proves to be beyond redemption and the movie crumbles under the weight of another toy-centric film debuting the same week.

Prediction: Child’s Play will be fun in one way or another. Much like last year’s Halloween, it will be among the best installments in its franchise, not as if that's saying much. The film is also low budget and, if decent, shouldn't have a problem turning a profit.
