While the princess movie has served as sort of a trademark for Disney movies since the very early days with Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, Big Hero 6 was a much welcome reminder that Disney can tackle the darker stuff just as well. After the princess heavy Frozen and Brave over the last few years (Wreck It Ralph and Tangled were somewhere in between), Big Hero 6 incorporates incredibly intricate special effects and CGI rather than a castle far far away and robot street fights rather than a coming of age princess story. It's a very warm welcome as well. Disney's acquisition of Marvel in 2009 has gone completely unnoticed in the animation studios until now. Together, Disney and Marvel have released spectacular films such as The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, but you're not likely to find any Hidden Mickeys in the Battle of New York or aboard the Milano without any black light. Aside from the brand name there's really very little if anything Disney about these films, and Disney Animation taking a stab at something even loosely based on Marvel could signal a new era in the now five year old acquisition.
