Big Hero 6: 6 Reasons It’s Better Than Frozen

3. The Villain

It was almost too difficult to believe that Anna had found and won her prince in the first act of Frozen, and yet it was still surprising when Prince Hans of the Southern Isles turned out to be pure evil. When he let Anna die while she was freezing to death from a frozen heart, it basically solidified Hans as the most truly evil Disney character in a while, mainly because his sole motivation was power envy; being twelfth in line for his own throne, he set off to marry Anna to become prince and kill Elsa and then his queen shortly thereafter. Pretty grumpy, right? It was a cliche power grab kind of villainy, which made Yokai in Big Hero 6 all the more interesting. The lead up to the film had the Disney blogs and Internet forums buzzing with theories that Tadashi was the man behind the mask (spoiler alert: he's not). The audience is led to believe throughout the entire first half of the movie that the bad guy is one person, and when he first comes face to face with Hiro, it turns out to be someone he never expected. Even better, unlike with Frozen the writers of Big Hero 6 made Yokai a sympathetic villain. Seeking revenge for the loss of his daughter, rage completely consumes him and he will not stop until he gets her back and the people responsible pay. This adds much more depth to the story than a simple power grab and is yet another indication that this movie is more Marvel than Disney, signaling a change of direction in the animation studios.
