20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

6. The Flash

Though 2023's The Flash released to broadly decent reviews, it was an utter box office disaster, the $220 million tentpole grossing just $271.4 million worldwide, making it one of the lowest-grossing movies in the DC Extended Universe.

And The Flash was surely a cursed project if there ever was one.

It had the misfortune of following a string of underperforming DCEU movies which suggested that general audiences were losing interest in the franchise, and Warner Bros. announcing an impending DC reboot before the film's release surely didn't help matters either.

Elsewhere there were star Ezra Miller's extensive legal issues in the lead up to the film's release, and the marketing hinging itself around both dubious nostalgia for Michael Keaton's Batman and the fast-tiring appeal of multiversal storytelling.

Plus, it had to square off against the vastly superior Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which released two weeks prior.

There was certainly a time when a movie based on The Flash seemed like a great idea, but Warner Bros. waited far too long to make it happen while also grappling with factors outside their control.
