20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

15. Lightyear

Even though Pixar suffered through some well-noted commercial struggles during the pandemic, it was simply assumed that Toy Story spin-off Lightyear would be a massive hit, because why wouldn't a Buzz Lightyear solo movie do huge numbers?

Yet the $200 million animation fell horrendously flat, topping out at a devastating $226.4 million, making it Pixar's lowest-grossing release at the time - if discounting those affected by pandemic releases in 2020 and 2021.

There was one overpowering issue with Lightyear, and it was a conceptual one - namely the decision to make it a film that exists within the Toy Story universe on which the Buzz Lightyear toy was based, rather than a film about the toy itself.

Confusing marketing which failed to adequately convey this made matters worse, and with audiences having been trained to watch Pixar films at home on Disney+ during the pandemic, there was desperately little incentive to watch this one on the big screen.

And with so-so reviews alongside fierce competition from both Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion, its fate was sealed.
