20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

16. Tron: Ares

Considering that Tron: Legacy underperformed enough at the box office for Disney to swear the cinematic franchise off for 15 years, expectations weren't exactly high for Tron: Ares to perform much differently.

Couple this with the film losing Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski, composers Daft Punk, and main cast members Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, and enthusiasm continually dwindled for this quasi-soft reboot.

It sure didn't help when Jared Leto was cast as the title character, all of this adding up to a film that had desperately little mainstream appeal.

And so, with an eye-wateringly huge $220 million budget, it ended up grossing just $142.2 million - barely one-third of Legacy's $409.9 million haul back in 2010.

Following Ares' release, reports emerged that Disney was now putting the Tron franchise on ice where movies are concerned.

Had this film instead been the direct sequel to Legacy that fans actually wanted, perhaps things would've been different.
