Billy Crystal: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

5 Awesome Performances...

5. Buddy Young Jr. - Mr. Saturday Night

After making it big with When Harry Met Sally Crystal decided to invest the credibility he€™d earned into Mr. Saturday Night, a pet project about an aging comedian. He wrote, directed and starred in the film, which appeared to be his bid for Oscar glory, though the lukewarm reaction to it put paid to those plans. The character of Buddy Young Jr. is still one of his most complex performances, where the audience sees the character develop from cocky young comedian to bitter old man. Buddy is addicted to making people laugh, but his ego quickly destroys his career and he spends the rest of his life trying to get back into the public eye. His relationship with his brother is the real heart of the movie, with Crystal and David Paymer €“ who received the film€™s only Oscar nod as Best Supporting Actor €“ playing beautifully off each other. The movie is flawed - and his old age make-up is distractingly terrible - but the movie showed Crystal at his most personal.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
