Bird Box Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

2. It's Not Just "A Quiet Place For Sight"

Even though Josh Malerman's novel predates this year's smash hit thriller A Quiet Place by four years, many haven't been able to resist comparing Bird Box to John Krasinski's cracking thriller.

And while on a superficial level the films are comparable - one is about losing your speech, the other your sight - once you look at them in any real detail, it seems like a facile, reductive way to examine either film.

To call Bird Box a rip-off of A Quiet Place is flippant and glib, given that their structure, character dynamics, and supernatural engagements are almost completely different.

A Quiet Place is certainly a better movie, but the same? Not a chance. It's a shame that this film is destined to carry around this baggage with it rather than stand on its own two feet.

But again, if you're at all watching the movie with an active mindset, the differences are really quite glaring.
