Birds Of Prey Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

6. The AWESOME Action Sequences

Birds of Prey Margot Robbie
Warner Bros.

Without any doubt whatsoever, Birds of Prey boasts the most consistently brilliant action sequences in any DCEU film to date. From first minute to last, the movie's set pieces are kinetic, brutal, and entirely visually coherent.

Unlike pretty much every other DCEU film, the overwhelming majority of the action is practical in nature, consisting largely of stuntpeople fighting one another in tangible environments, with few green screens or janky CGI stunt doubles in sight.

As a result the various fight scenes, of which there are many, have a thoroughly tactile quality to them, aided by the realistically bone-crunching sound editing and, of course, the R-rated tone.

Director Cathy Yan ensures the various acrobatic fights are creative and distinct from one another, sure to leave audiences both impressed by the athleticism and wincing at all the broken bones on display.

For anyone fed up of DCEU movies deferring to ugly CGI-soaked final battles, rest assured that Birds of Prey categorically breaks the curse with its barmy-yet-practical finale.
