Black Panther Trailer Reactions: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

3. The Sci-Fi Feel

As well as Blade Runner, it's impossible not to feel a slight Star Wars vibe from some of the scenes shown in the trailer. The communities we see hinted at are pure LucasFilm, and there are aerial battles between futuristic vehicles that could have been ripped from that franchise.

That's not to say there's any copycatting going on here though - Black Panther's feel is much more about payign homage and spinning in new influences (like Afrofuturism) to make something that feels nostalgic and brand new at the same time. Again, that's exactly what Wakanda is all about.

It feels like Black Panther also owes more to the likes of Guardians Of The Galaxy and Doctor Strange than it does to the earlier Phase 1 and 2 movies. And a lot of that comes down to the conscious embrace of the weirder side of life, which we're probably going to see more and more now that James Gunn is in a broader creative role at Marvel.
