Black Panther Trailer Reactions: 7 Ups & 2 Downs

2. A Deeply Personal Story

Despite all of the flashy effects and the sci-fi elements, the trailer is very clear to outline the fact that this is a very personal story. Sure, there may be some complaints about Marvel once more using a villain who is a dark mirror of the hero (as they've done countless times before), but that is the best way to launch a new property like this. Binary stories work to shine a light on what the characters are and where they want to be.

Black Panther isn't just about a threat to Wakanda and the world (though that's a big part), it's about T'Challa finding his own way to becoming the right sort of leader and man. He will discover that through difficulties like fighting Erik Killmonger - his challenger to the throne of Wakanda - and Ulysses Klaue, while he protects the sanctity of his world's secrets. But it's that part of the story that is the most important when everything else washes away.

And it's that emotional grounding that will make the film succeed most of all.
