Blade Runner 2 Is Going To Be In 3D
Uh oh.
Good news, fans of post-production 3D conversion, Blade Runner 2 is going to be positively leaping out of screens into your eyeballs. If you can at all sense some bitterness in there, three points to you, because this is not the kind of news that is at all necessary. Now, if it was shot in 3D and billed as a dimensional experience like The Walk was, it might not have been such a bad thing, but the Denis Villeneuve's shooting partner Roger Deakins says he'd never shoot in 3D:
"No, I won't. I've been offered it. I just don't want to. I think I'm gonna do this film with Denis that'll be made into 3D eventually, but it won't be shot in 3D."The question is, if Villeneuve doesn't like working with 3D, why is it being insisted upon? He also openly says he doesn't "really like watching 3D", which should be cause for concern. The setting - presumably upgraded from Middlesbrough this time around - would have been the right sort of canvas for a full 3D shoot, and the medium could have made it even more of a character. As long as it didn't go full Alice In Wonderland and distract entirely from what is happening in the foreground. This is the latest information about Blade Runner 2 that doesn't quite sit well. Yes, director Villeneuve is very talented, but in the words of probably every Blade Runner fan: "Ridley Scott needs to make Blade Runner 2 properly, before he dies." That goes doubly so now that The Martian has proved to be so good. The film is one of those that could be genius, but which could also be Tron: Legacy. It's been a long, long time since the original came out at the perfect time (contextually it speaks to the industrial and employment crises of the early '80s) and futurist fear isn't as pronounced now (hence the declining love for the Terminator franchise and the odd way the titular villain of that has become beloved). So it's for good reason that a lot of fans don't even want to see the sequel happen at all. But Hollywood's will triumphs every time, and Villeneuve is the man to lead it. He will also probably be able to call on the services of Ryan Gosling alongside Harrison Ford, which is less off-putting, provided you're a fan of the increasingly silent actor.
