Bright Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs

1. The Banter Is Sometimes Enjoyable

Though the script is totally all over the place, it does at least manage to intermittently hit the mark when it comes down to the quick-fire banter between Smith and Edgerton's characters.

Though David Ayer didn't write the film, he's proven in films like Training Day, End of Watch and Fury that he has a real knack for directing entertaining chit-chat, and some of that clearly rubs off here.

The back-and-forth between the cop protagonists is generally played for laughs, but there are even occasional moments where it hits home on a dramatic level, specifically a heart-to-heart between the pair at the end of the second act.

When the film isn't busy trying to drown the audience in excess exposition, it actually stops to take a breather and teases out something approaching real character development.
