Bright Review: 3 Ups & 6 Downs

2. The Superb Makeup Effects

Bright Joel Edgerton
Netflix

Much like Ayer's previous film Suicide Squad, which controversially won an Oscar for its makeup effects, Bright benefits hugely from its fantastic makeup work.

As much as you might dislike the film in other areas, the fantastically lifelike Orc makeup allows Edgerton and other actors to completely disappear into their characters, while also blending into the aesthetic enough to not look totally ridiculous.

The elf characters also look great, especially those played by Noomi Rapace and Edgar Ramirez, so it's ultimately just a shame that this excellent crafts work didn't end up in a better film.

On the flip side, Bright has qualified into the final seven movies eligible for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar, so it could very well end up nominated for an Academy Award in a few short weeks.
