Bumblebee: 8 Reasons Why It Will Be The Best Transformers Film Ever
3. Bumblebee Isn't A Dick
As mentioned earlier, Bumblebee looks to be going all in on the Amblin vibes and focusing on the relationship between Bumblebee and Charlie. A vital part of the reason that this looks so compelling though is because for the first time in at least four films, Bumblebee actually looks like an endearing and likable character.
As Bay's films carried on, he became more fond of the idea of turning his Transformers, including the Autobots (actually, especially the Autobots) into ginormous dicks.
The once-caring and fair leadership of Optimus Prime was traded in for him shouting lines like "We'll kill them all!" just a few sequels in. And look, we're not even going to get into the use of racial stereotypes to attempt to give the Autobots 'character' (if you're looking for that, check out Lindsay Ellis' excellent The Whole Plate series) but suffice it to say Bay made increasingly poorer choices on how to actually characterize his supposed heroes.
And Bumblebee was no exception. Even without a voice, he was turned into an increasingly aggressive and unlikable character. But in this new film, Bumblebee looks to be returned to his proper innocence and friendliness. This is a pretty obviously intention choice, from his loving interactions with Charlie in the trailer, to his design even adding elements like the smaller flaps on his head to act similarly to a dog's ears.
This all goes a long way towards making him a more endearing and sympathetic character.
